Shanghai: Chinese scientists have developed a new breast cancer treatment strategy by converting treatment-resistant tumors to a more treatable state
According to media reports, Chinese scientists from Fudan University have developed a strategy for treating highly aggressive forms of breast cancer. The research, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, introduces a transformative approach that converts treatment-resistant tumors into a more treatable state, offering hope for improved outcomes in patients with deadly triple-negative breast cancer.
The study focused on the analysis of tumor samples from 401 patients with varying homologous recombination deficiency scores—a key factor in a tumor’s response to DNA-damaging drugs. Patients with low deficiency scores typically exhibit poor responses to such treatments. The researchers identified a crucial molecule, GDP-M, which hinders DNA repair in tumor cells, subsequently raising deficiency scores by promoting the degradation of a cancer-linked protein.
In mouse models, supplementation of GDP-M demonstrated the ability to enhance the responsiveness of breast tumors to approved DNA-damaging drugs like cisplatin, while also boosting antitumor immunity. Notably, GDP-M exhibited the capacity to empower PARP inhibitors, a targeted agent class for breast cancer treatment, in laboratory settings.
The findings suggest a promising clinical strategy that involves combining GDP-M with other DNA repair-targeted therapies. This groundbreaking research opens new avenues for advancing breast cancer treatment, providing a potential lifeline for patients facing aggressive forms of the disease.
