India, Pakistan Exchange Lists of Nuclear Installations and Prisoners as Part of Biannual Tradition

Islamabad: The exchange of lists of nuclear installations and prisoners between Pakistan and India has taken place.

In adherence to a longstanding agreement, India and Pakistan engaged in the exchange of lists detailing their respective nuclear installations and prisoners on January 1. This biannual tradition occurs under the provisions of the Pakistan-India Consular Access Agreement of May 21, 2008, and involves the sharing of vital information through diplomatic channels. The exchange is carried out on the first of January and the first of July each year.

The lists of nuclear facilities were exchanged in the capitals of both countries, with Pakistan’s list handed over to a senior official of the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, and India providing its list to officials of the Pakistan High Commission at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in New Delhi.

Additionally, both nations exchanged lists of prisoners held in each other’s jails. A total of 231 Indian prisoners in Pakistan, comprising 47 civilians and 184 fishermen, were handed over to the Indian High Commission. Simultaneously, India presented a similar list of 418 Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails, consisting of 337 civilians and 81 fishermen, to the Pakistani High Commission officials.

The Indian government has received appeals to release and repatriate Pakistani civilian prisoners and fishermen who have completed their sentences and have confirmed national status. Requests for consular access to missing defense personnel from the 1965 and 1971 wars and special consular access to 77 civil prisoners were also made.

According to the spokesperson of Foreign Affairs, Zahra Baloch, this is the 33rd exchange of lists of nuclear installations between Pakistan and India.
