Copenhagen: Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has announced her abdication, marking a historic decision to relinquish the throne after 52 years.
According to media reports, the 83-year-old Queen Margrethe II of Denmark will step down from her position on January 14, 2024, exactly 52 years after assuming the throne. After 52 years, she will pass the throne to her son, Crown Prince Frederik.
“I have decided that now is the right time. On 14 January 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as queen of Denmark,” she said.
“I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik,” she added.
It’s noteworthy that Queen Margrethe II holds the record for the longest-reigning monarch in Denmark’s history. At 83 years old, the queen, who ascended to the throne in 1972, holds the record as the longest-serving monarch in Europe, after Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September 2022.
