‘I Was Tortured Mentally and Physically by the SHO’, says Shah Mahmood Qureshi

Rawalpindi: Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), appeared in court, recounting police brutality against him. He stated that he was trapped in a false case, and SHO Jamal physically and mentally tortured him, subjecting him to kicks, punches, and shoving.

On Thursday, Additional Session Judge Syed Jahangir Ali heard the request for Shah Mahmood’s physical remand at the Judicial Complex. The police presented the former Foreign Minister handcuffed.

The judge ordered to open Shah Mahmood’s handcuffs in the courtroom. The prosecution team, requesting a 30-day physical remand for a thorough investigation, stated that Shah Mahmood Qureshi incited the public to protest on May 9.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi, addressing the courtroom, stated that he was trapped in a false case, and SHO Jamal physically and mentally tortured him, subjecting him to kicks, punches, and shoving. He said he requested medical assistance due to his deteriorating condition, but the police officers denied it.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi stated that he was tortured mentally and physically. Emotionally recounting the events, stated that he was kept in an extremely freezing cold room all night. The lights were turned off, and candles were lit. Suddenly, the brightest lights were turned on, and 25 people laughed loudly. He was not allowed to sleep all night. “Is this justice?”, he asked.

The former Foreign Minister stated that he was ready to take an oath on the Holy Quran, and emphasized that he was not in Rawalpindi or Punjab on May 9 but in Karachi.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that a significant personality stated that he was not involved on May 9. If the court desires, he can reveal the name of that personality who holds a crucial position in the government today.

During the hearing, Prosecutor Akram Amin requested the court to grant Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s physical remand of the accused for the purpose of conducting investigations into 12 cases, including the attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ), the army museum, the premises of an intelligence agency and Metro bus station burning cases. His lawyer argued for Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s discharge, stating that there is no justification for his physical remand; it is a false retaliatory case. When the charge sheet is presented, how can a physical remand be given? Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s name is not mentioned in the entire charge sheet, he stated.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the court reserved its decision on Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s 30-day physical remand request.
