Moscow: Russia has claimed that its forces have now gained complete control over the Maryinka town in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, a development hailed by President Vladimir Putin as a “success,” indicating a potential tightening of Russian control over the Ukrainian-held region of Donetsk.
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, in a meeting aired on state television on Monday, informed Putin that “The assault detachment of the ‘Southern’ group completely liberated the settlement of Maryinka today,”.
Drone footage shown on Russian television displayed extensive areas with damaged and ruined apartment buildings, reportedly in Maryinka.
“I want to congratulate you; this is a success,” Putin told Shoigu. He added that this success provides Russian troops with the opportunity to enter “a vast operational area,” and further push out the Ukrainian forces.
Shoigu stated that gaining control of Maryinka would enable their forces to “move further in that direction” and protect Donetsk from Ukrainian attacks “more effectively.”
However, Ukrainian military spokesperson  Oleksandr Shtupun stated that it is “incorrect” to claim that Maryinka is entirely under Russian control. He emphasized that the fight for Maryinka continues, and Ukrainian forces are still present within the borders of Maryinka.
He mentioned that the town had been significantly damaged, but the claims of full capture care were incorrect
The Ukrainian military’s counteroffensive, launched in June with a front line stretching across the country’s south and east, has seen limited successes.
