Support for Gaza Becomes a Crime: Usman Khawaja Reprimanded by ICC for Wearing Black Armband

Melbourne: Expressing solidarity with the beleaguered people of Gaza, who are victims of Israeli war crimes has become a criminal offense. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reprimanded Pakistan-born Australian batter Usman Khawaja for wearing a black armband in solidarity with the people of Gaza.

Usman Khawaja, who was recently barred from displaying messages, “Freedom is a human right” and “All lives are equal” on his shoes in support of Gaza,  has once again come into the limelight after he was reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for wearing a black armband during the recent test against Pakistan.

The Pakistan-born opener had intended to wear the shoes during the game but was prevented by the ICC rules. Instead, he wore a black armband, leading to the ICC reprimanding him.

According to international news sources, the ICC states that Usman Khawaja violated the rules of the International Cricket Council.

An ICC spokesperson stated that Khawaja did not seek permission from Cricket Australia or the ICC regarding wearing a black armband during the match and the ICC deemed Khawaja’s actions a breach of Clothing and Equipment Regulations, issuing a reprimand for a first offense meaning Khawaja has the option to receive a warning and proceed with playing without violating ICC rules again. Nevertheless, if he opts to wear the armband once more in the second test against Pakistan, commencing next Tuesday in Melbourne, he risks incurring further sanctions.

It is noteworthy that Gaza has endured over 10 weeks of relentless Israeli bombardment which has resulted in over 20,000 Palestinians being martyred including over 8,000 children, 6,200 women, 310 medics, and 97 journalists, while 52,586 have been injured as a direct result of the Israeli assault, and 355,00 cases of infectious diseases reported in shelters.

Furthermore, 90% of the population in Gaza is now homeless and forced to live under the open sky and 70% of the infrastructure in Gaza has been destroyed. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has intensified due to Israel’s repeated acts of collective punishment and blatant aggression, with the occupying forces committing mass killings in each targeted household.

This incident with Usman Khawaja revives discussions around the ICC’s stance on players expressing personal or political views during matches. Comparisons are drawn to England’s Moeen Ali, who was banned in 2014 for wearing wristbands advocating “Save Gaza” and “Free Palestine.” It raises questions about the consistency of the ICC’s policies, especially in light of allowing players to “take the knee” for the “Black Lives Matter” movement in previous years.
