Michigan: A new study led by Michigan Medicine sheds light on the significant emotional toll experienced by caregivers of severe stroke patients. The research, published in Neurology, indicates that nearly 30% of caregivers face elevated levels of anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress within the first year after the patient’s hospital discharge.
Stroke, known for its sudden and life-altering impact, not only affects the individuals directly but also takes a considerable toll on their caregivers, often requiring them to make challenging decisions swiftly. The study, conducted by Lewis Morgenstern, M.D., and his team, emphasizes the need to recognize and address the long-term consequences faced by caregivers.
Dr. Lewis Morgenstern, a professor of neurology, neurosurgery, and emergency medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, notes, “This research suggests that depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress are common among family members who make life and death decisions for their loved ones who are very sick.” The study highlights the prevalence of post-traumatic stress, particularly among Mexican American caregivers, constituting two-thirds of the study population.
The prospective study enrolled stroke survivors and their surrogates in Nueces County, Texas, who were tasked with deciding on life-sustaining treatments post-severe stroke between April 2016 and October 2020. Between 17% and 28% of caregivers reported high psychological distress scores, encompassing anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Remarkably, up to 16% of caregivers experienced all three conditions.
The research emphasizes the need for robust support systems for families, advocating for family-centered care in hospitals. Dr. Morgenstern underscores the importance of recognizing the emotional challenges faced by caregivers and integrating support mechanisms within the healthcare framework.
