UNGA Adopts Pakistan-Philippines Resolution Promoting Inter-Religious and Intercultural Dialogue

Islamabad: In a landmark move, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has unanimously adopted a resolution sponsored by Pakistan and the Philippines, focusing on the “Promotion of interreligious and intercultural dialogue, understanding, and cooperation for peace.” The resolution, initiated in 2004, aims to cultivate a culture of peace through fostering interreligious and intercultural dialogue.

The resolution, supported by more than 40 countries at the United Nations, urges states to promote inclusion and unity in combating racism, xenophobia, hate speech, violence, and discrimination. Diplomats from various countries pointed out that the resolution is timely and unanimously approved by the 193-member assembly in the current situation of increasing religious intolerance and racism, especially Islamophobia worldwide. It is a message of international solidarity and cooperation.

The adopted resolution emphasizes the special responsibilities associated with the exercise of the right to freedom of expression. It underscores the significance of respecting “religious symbols” and firmly states that violence should never be a justifiable or acceptable response to acts of intolerance. Furthermore, the resolution highlights that violence should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization, or ethnic group.

Pakistan’s permanent UN Ambassador Munir Akram stated while introducing the resolution in the Assembly:

“To secure universal peace among and within nations, it is essential to promote a ‘culture of peace’ – a culture which respects, accepts and accommodates – in policy and practice – the diverse ethnical, religious and cultures which compose the mosaic of the modern States and our globalized international community,”.

The unanimous support for this resolution by the General Assembly holds particular significance against the backdrop of the escalating global challenges related to religious intolerance and racism, with a specific mention of addressing Islamophobia. The adoption of this resolution sends a powerful message of international solidarity and cooperation in tackling these pressing issues.

Pakistan, along with the Philippines, will continue to spearhead efforts aimed at promoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue. The goal is to advance understanding, cooperation for peace, and the cherished values of peaceful coexistence, interfaith harmony, and cultural unity on the international stage.
