Mumbai: Australia’s Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins have made history as the most expensive signings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), surpassing the previous record held by England’s Sam Curran (£1.85m ) in the 2022 auction.
Starc, a left-arm pacer who had the Indian Premier League for eight years, secured a groundbreaking deal with the Kolkata Knight Riders, fetching a $2.98 million deal. This stellar signing outstripped Cummins’ earlier record-breaking deal of $2.46 million with Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Kolkata Knight Riders celebrated their acquisition, stating, “We won, Mr. Starc!”. Starc’s return to the IPL triggered intense bidding, with Mumbai Indians and Delhi initially vying for his services. Ultimately, Kolkata emerged victorious, beating Gujarat Titans with the winning bid.

Meanwhile, Cummins, fresh from leading Australia to an ODI World Cup title in India, entered the auction with a base price of $240,458. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings initially expressed interest, but both withdrew as a fierce bidding war unfolded. Ultimately, Hyderabad secured Cummins.
Daryl Mitchell of New Zealand also struck gold in the auction, as Chennai Super Kings splurged $1.68 million to acquire the talented batting all-rounder at a remarkable 10 times his base price. Indian seamer Harshal Patel joined the millionaire’s club, securing a deal with Punjab Kings for $1.4 million.
Surprisingly Australia’s star players Steve Smith and Josh Hazlewood were unsold in the first round of bidding, while Maxwell, David Warner, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Mitchell Marsh, Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa, Green, Jason Behrendorff and Nathan Ellis were retained by their franchises before the auction.
