Fertilizer Crisis Intensifies, Record Increase in Prices

Lahore: A severe fertilizer crisis has emerged in various cities of the country, causing difficulties for farmers in obtaining fertilizers.

According to media reports, within 15 days, there has been a record increase of Rs. 1,500 in the price of fertilizer. The cost of black fertilizer has reached up to Rs. 5,000. Like other districts of Southern Punjab, farmers in Rajanpur are forced to wander in search of fertilizer.

The government had claimed that by increasing wheat production this year, they not only would achieve self-sufficiency but also generate surplus wheat. However, this claim seems to be proven false.

The fertilizer, essential for the first sowing of wheat, is not available, causing distress among farmers. They fear that the production per acre will significantly decrease.

During a survey conducted in the suburban areas of Lahore, the availability of urea in stores was extremely limited. Where available, it was being sold at high prices, with the Rs. 3,750 bags being sold for Rs. 5,200.

Farmers claim that dealers and stockists are manipulating artificial shortages, selling fertilizer in black, and taking advantage of the peak in prices. The cost has surged from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 5,200 within a year.

Farmers further express that the authorities are not taking any substantial action. If this trend continues, it will become impossible to fertilize wheat crops again, severely affecting production.

On the other hand, the district administration in Hafizabad has taken strict measures to provide fertilizers to farmers at controlled rates.
