New York: Israeli officials were in possession of Hamas’s battle plan for the October 7 attack more than a year before it occurred, according to documents, emails, and interviews reviewed by The New York Times. The 40-page document, codenamed “Jericho Wall,” outlined a detailed assault on Israel, including rocket attacks, drones, and ground infiltration.
Despite having this information, Israeli military and intelligence officials dismissed the plan as aspirational and considered it beyond Hamas’s capabilities. The document was circulated among Israeli military and intelligence leaders, but experts deemed an attack of that scale unlikely.
Hamas, however, executed the plan with precision, leading to approximately 1,200 deaths. The document raised questions about how Hamas acquired intelligence on Israeli military forces and sensitive information.
According to The New York Times, warnings about the impending attack were reportedly overlooked, with a veteran analyst’s concerns dismissed in July, just three months before the attacks. The analyst from Unit 8200, Israel’s signals intelligence agency, pointed out that Hamas had conducted a training exercise similar to the Jericho Wall plan.
Had the warnings been taken seriously, Israeli officials acknowledge that significant reinforcements could have been redirected to prevent or mitigate the attacks. The Jericho Wall document is now seen as revealing a cascade of missteps and the worst Israeli intelligence failure since 1973.
The Israeli military and the Israeli Security Agency declined to comment on the report, and officials did not specify how they obtained the Jericho Wall document. The Israeli government is expected to assemble a commission to study the events leading up to the attacks.
