New York: The U.S. government-funded news organization, Voice of America (VOA), prohibited its journalists from using the term “terrorist” for Hamas.
The American newspaper The Washington Post reported that VOA’s editor Carol Guensburg issued guidance to staff through an email, urging them to refrain from labeling Hamas and its members as “terrorists” unless in direct quotations while covering the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel.
The editorial guidance suggests alternatives such as “terrorist acts” or “acts of terror” when referring to Hamas.
In a letter to the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), the parent organization of VOA, U.S. Senator, Hagerty expressed concern over what he perceives as a deviation from VOA’s principle of delivering comprehensive news. The letter, co-signed by six other Republican senators, questions how VOA’s editorial policy aligns with the interests of American taxpayers who fund the news organization.
In response, VOA asserted that there is no policy prohibiting the use of terms like “terrorist,”.
The controversy has prompted VOA and other news organizations overseen by USAGM to review their policies and their implementation, pressurizing them to follow the U.S.-Israel narrative.
