New Blood Test Could Reduce the Risk of Heart Attacks

Edinburgh: Medical experts have obtained results from a study suggesting that a new blood test could assist in reducing the risks of heart attacks.

According to researchers, the use of a high-sensitivity blood test in A&E departments for new cases and emergencies can prove helpful in better diagnosis and treatment of heart attacks, potentially reducing the risks of future heart attacks or fatalities.

In an experiment overseen by experts at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, utilizing the new blood test and measuring troponin (a protein released into the blood after a heart injury) could reduce the risks of heart attacks in patients over the next 5 years by up to 10%.

This new test has presented more accurate results compared to the previous version, benefiting patients whose heart arteries were affected by conditions such as heart failure, cardiac issues, and arrhythmias.

To assess the impact of the test, the researchers’ team examined the results of tests on nearly 50,000 individuals from all over Scotland who underwent a heart attack between 2013 and 2016. The researchers utilized the data and examined all patients for five years.

With the help of the test, the team identified that in more than 10,000 individuals, the level of troponin was higher, indicating the likelihood of heart muscle injury.
