UN Chief Says Extended Gaza Truce is Insufficient to Meet Aid Needs

New York: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has declared the extension of two days to the previously four-day truce as an extremely short duration to meet aid needs in Gaza.

Expressing concern over the insufficient short duration of the temporary ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, the Secretary-General of the United Nations stated that while a ceasefire could provide “a glimpse of hope and humanity”, it is not a lasting solution.

“I strongly hope that this will enable us to increase even more the humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza that (are) suffering so much – knowing that even with that additional amount of time, it will be impossible to satisfy all the dramatic needs of the population,” said Guterres.

Antonio Guterres, emphasizing the need to open more corridors for the timely delivery of aid in Gaza, said that the two-day extension in the truce is minimal for providing assistance to the Palestinians.

Furthermore, Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement, “The dialog that led to the agreement must continue, resulting in a full humanitarian cease-fire, for the benefit of the people of Gaza, Israel and the wider region,”.  While expressing hope he also highlighted that the aid being delivered is insufficient for the people of Gaza.

“But this aid barely registers against the huge needs of 1.7 million displaced people. The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is getting worse by the day,” he said.

It is noteworthy that after the temporary ceasefire, during the four days, Hamas has so far released 58 hostages including 39 Israeli civilians, while Israel has released 117 Palestinian women and children.
