Cool and calm, with a slight smile, wearing a colorful shirt and jeans, along with his distinctive white ponytail, Tanweer walks me through the artistic atmosphere of his flat in downtown Karachi. There seems to be an air of the ’70s and an ’80s young man about it. As we turn the corner, I peer at what I think is a photograph which I compliment, Tanweer, with a big smile now assures me that it is one of his many sketches. Now I am shocked as I go to touch it and then suddenly stop because it is rude to be too inquisitive. “Go ahead,” says Tanweer politely as he understands my urge to touch the ink sketch. “Oh dear, you have to buy the sketch now, Sohail,” says Tanweer as we both laugh now.

Tanweer Farooqui is one of the great painters and sketch artists of Pakistan coming up to 40 years in his incredible work. Having spent some time with him at his home and in art galleries, I have found him to be well respected by his peers, students, and the public throughout Pakistan. Even the great curator Nageen Hyat from Islamabad simply refers to him as ‘Just brilliant!’

He is a widely exhibited figurative painter who studied under the guidance of Eqbal Mehdi. Besides working on solo shows, his work has been displayed at many shows, both nationally and internationally. Tanweer is also currently the President of the Artists Association of Sindh and the Deputy Chairman Artists Association of Pakistan.
