UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Under the Spotlight

New York: António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, has garnered attention on Arab social media for his condemnation of Israeli aggression and support for the suffering civilians in Gaza. Social media users have praised his statements.

It is worth noting that during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that the Hamas attacks did not happen in a vacuum and that the Palestinians have endured 56 years of oppressive occupation. He emphasized that these attacks were in response to Israel’s oppressive actions and that the October 7 attacks cannot be used as a justification for the mass killings of Palestinians.

Guterres’ remarks have generated controversy within Israel’s political circles, while in the Arab world, social media platforms have been full of praise for his stance.

Social media users have described Guterres’ statements as “‘better late than never” and urged Arab leaders to at least adopt a position similar to Guterres’.

In response to the statements of Guterres, Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan demanded his resignation and said that he is “not fit to lead the UN”. While the Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen canceled a meeting with the Guterres.

It is noteworthy that Antonio Guterres is a Portuguese politician and diplomat who has held both domestic and foreign offices in his home country. On October 13, 2016, he was elected to the position of United Nations Secretary-General, replacing Ban Ki-moon.
