90-Day Prison Sentence Reduction Announced on Eid Milad-un-Nabi

Islamabad: On the occasion of Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, President Arif Alvi has announced a reduction of 90 days in prisoners’ sentences.

According to media reports, the approval for sentence reduction comes under Article 45 of the Constitution. This reduction in sentences will not apply to convicts in cases of espionage, state opposition, murder, robbery, abduction, adultery, theft, and terrorism.

The reduction in sentences will neither apply to individuals convicted under the Foreigners Act, 1946, nor the Control of Narcotics (Amendment) Act, 2022, among others, for crimes that have caused financial losses to the national treasury.

In the case of prison sentences, the reduction will apply to male inmates over the age of 65 who have served two-thirds of their sentence, female inmates over the age of 60 who have served two-thirds of their sentence, and individuals under the age of 18 who have served two-thirds of their sentence.
