Karachi: Hafiz Naeem ur Rahman, the Amir (Chief) of Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi, announced a citywide strike against inflation and soaring electricity bills in Karachi on Tuesday, September 19.
JI leaders expressed their concerns at a press conference held at the Idara Noor-e-Haq office of Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi on Sunday. During the press conference, Hafiz Naeem ur Rahman appealed to the people of Karachi to observe a complete shutdown across the city on Tuesday, covering all major arteries as a form of protest.
Later that day, Hafiz Naeem ur Rahman led a protest sit-in at Shahrah-e-Faisal.
JI leaders criticized the caretaker government for increasing PoL prices for the third time within a month, deeming it illogical due to the fact that the US dollar’s value is depreciating.
The leaders called on the government to take immediate action to reduce petrol, electricity, and other utility bills. They also urged the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan to address these issues and make decisions in favor of the public.
Hafiz Naeem ur Rahman further stated that a letter would be written to the Chief Justice regarding this matter.
He further demanded that the caretaker Prime Minister cut off subsidies and luxuries offered to the elite in government offices. He also urged the caretaker PM to use a 1000cc car if he was sincere with the public and that judges and generals should also follow suit. Similarly, he said that all public sector officials and officeholders should have their free petrol, electricity, or any such benefits immediately discontinued.
Hafiz Naeem ur Rahman appealed to the public to come forward against injustice and tyranny, emphasizing that the only way forward in the current circumstances is to engage in a long-term struggle.
