Rising Islamophobia in France: 81% French People Support the Abaya Ban

The beginning of the new academic year in France has brought fresh challenges for Muslim students due to the controversial government decision to ban wearing abayas in schools. This decision has sparked concern within the Muslim community in the country.

A recent poll conducted by IFOP has revealed the deep-seated Islamophobia prevailing in France, with a staggering 81% of respondents expressing their support for the ban on wearing abayas in schools. The ban has caused significant controversy and protests.

According to IFOP’s survey, a remarkable 81% of the French population endorses the prohibition of abayas and qamis in public schools, deeming them to possess an “undeniable religious character.” The poll further reveals that:

  • 70% of French citizens believe that these garments undeniably have religious significance.
  • Among French Muslims, 41% perceive abayas and qamis as having a religious aspect, while 48% do not view them as religious attire.

This poll emerged following a significant development when France’s highest court recently upheld the legality of the government’s ban on wearing Abayas in school. The Council of State dismissed an appeal by a Muslim rights group, affirming that the ban is not discriminatory against Muslims.

The court also emphasized that the wearing of abayas and qamis in schools aligns with the concept of “religious affiliation.” Additionally, the government’s ban extends to any conspicuous display of religious affiliation in public school buildings.

Vincent Brengarth, a lawyer for the Muslim Rights Action, had filed an appeal with the Council of State to seek the suspension of the abaya ban, citing a violation of “several fundamental freedoms.”

While the government defends its stance on the ban, this move has triggered a backlash, with critics arguing that it exacerbates the growing issue of Islamophobia in France. The government has been under scrutiny for its policies and statements targeting Muslims in recent years, including raids on mosques and charitable organizations, and the enactment of an “anti-separatism” law imposing extensive restrictions on the Muslim community.

In the wake of the controversial abaya ban in French schools, a group of demonstrators staged a protest in the northern city of Trappes. Protesters, including some parents of schoolgirls, rallied against the ban, asserting that the abaya ban infringes on individual freedoms. They called for the government to address issues of hate speech and anti-Muslim sentiment instead of imposing such bans.

This controversial ban has put immense pressure on young Muslim girls, and will likely become an obstacle in their pursuit of education. The ban has met with strong opposition from parents and concerned citizens. Many believe that individuals should have the freedom to choose their attire and express their religious beliefs without government interference.

In support of the abaya ban, French President Emmanuel Macron has lauded the government’s decision, further intensifying the ongoing debate on the role of religious symbols and attire in public spaces in France.
