India Leads in Religious Extremism and Violence Against Minorities

New Delhi: The International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief was observed worldwide. India tops the list when it comes to religious extremism and violence against minorities.

According to media reports, more than 5 lakh Muslims have been killed in 93,647 violent incidents involving Muslims since India’s independence. Thousands of Muslims were killed during the 1989 riots in Bihar, the 2002 riots in Gujarat, and the 2020 Delhi riots.

Hate crimes against Christians have also crossed 400 in the first 6 months of this year. Thousands of Christians were killed by extremists during the 1998 Gujarat, 2008 Odisha, and recent Manipur riots. According to the Open Doors Organization, in the list of violence against Christians in India rose from 28th in 2014 to 10th in 2022.

According to global media reports, crimes against Dalits increased by 66% after Modi came into power. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, over 2.5 lakh hate crimes were committed against lower-caste Hindus in the last 5 years. Thousands of Dalit Hindus were killed by upper caste Hindus during the 2000 Karnataka and 2012 Tamil Nadu riots. Thousands of Sikhs were killed during the 1984 Jammu, 1969 Gujarat, and 2000 Chhattisgarh riots.
