EU Parliament Criticizes Modi’s visit to France on Bastille Day

Paris: French President Macron extended a warm welcome to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the guest of honor for the traditional Bastille Day on Friday. However, this gesture comes at a time when concerns over human rights violations under the current New Delhi government are growing.

President Macron took to Twitter to express his sentiments, describing India as a “giant in world history” and emphasizing its strategic partnership and friendship with France. Around 240 Indian soldiers and three fighter jets participated in the parade, symbolizing the 25-year strategic partnership between the two nations.

However, amidst the diplomatic engagement with Modi, a resolution passed by the European Parliament served as a reminder of the criticism that he and his Hindu nationalist agenda have faced domestically and internationally. The motion urged India to address the violence in northeastern Manipur state and protect minority communities affected by clashes between the Meitei, who are predominantly Hindu, and the Kuki tribe, mainly comprising Christians. The resolution criticized the “nationalistic rhetoric” of the local state government, which is led by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Pierre Larrouturou, a member of the European Parliament, stated that honoring Modi during Bastille Day was not only an affront to India’s minority communities, journalists, and human rights defenders but also to India as a democracy. He criticized the meeting in a tweet stating “Every day in India, thousands of Muslims, Christians and members of ethnic minorities see their rights repressed. To remain silent on the situation would have been a humiliation for all those who fight for their rights and suffer every day from the Hindu nationalism imposed by the Modi government.”.
