PM Imran takes jibe at opposition lawmakers over ECL criticism

ISLAMABAD: Responding the criticism of PTI-led government move to put the names of opposition lawmakers on the Exit Control List (ECL), Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday asked in a sarcastic tone as to why some lawmakers are so keen to go abroad.

Recently, the PTI government has put the names of PPP leadership including Asif Ali Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto and Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah among others on ECL following the JIT report in the fake account case. Despite the Supreme Court order, the government has not yet removed the names of Bilawal Bhutto and Murad Ali Shah from ECL.

On Thursday the Prime Minister tweeted: “Why are some of our lawmakers so scared of the ECL? Why are they so keen to go abroad? There is so much work to be done by politicians in and for Pakistan — the land they claim to love but some cannot wait to take frequent trips abroad and lawmakers have iqamas or residencies abroad.”

“Can anyone explain this strange phenomenon to those of us who would be quite happy to remain in and work for Pakistan because we actually love Pakistan,” he added.

On Wednesday, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi expressed regret over Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government’s ‘rash decision’ of placing 172 individuals on the no-fly list after their names emerged in a money-laundering probe.

The SC had come down hard on the government and ordered the government to review the case. In a subsequent hearing, it had directed for removal of Bilawal and Murad from the ECL.
