Govt Rejects WEF’s Report Ranking Pakistan 2nd Worst Country in Gender Equality

ISLAMABAD: The government dismissed the recent World Economic Forum (WEF) report raking Pakistan as the second worst country in the world for gender equality as incorrect.

The government said that the statistics of the report are incorrect.

Minister for Human Rights took the floor of the National Assembly to voice the government’s concerns over the report.

Mazari said the “Global Gender Gap Report 2018” by World Economic Forum (WEF) was based on wrong data and distorted facts about the status of women in Pakistan.

The report has placed Pakistan at the rock-bottom of the 149 countries it surveyed for gender equality.  Pakistan was ranked 148th out of 149 nations on the index. Islamabad only bettered war-torn Yemen.

Speaking during the Question Hour in the National Assembly today, Mazari said there is no denying of the fact the country has the problem of gender disparity but the figures quoted in the report were incorrect.

The person, who was providing data to WEF from Pakistan, sent wrong figures to them and distorted the ground situation, she added.

She said that the government had contacted WEF to set the record straight.

She pointed out that the WEF report wrongly showed that there was no female minister in the previous government, whereas three ministers were part of the federal cabinet.

She said the government had started a campaign to create awareness on the rights of women. “Women who were facing difficulty in getting their inherited property would be given pro bono assistance in every district and lawyers would be available to help them,” she added.
