SUCRE, BOLIVIA- Salt flats in Bolivia are the nature’s wonder where it is near to impossible to distinguish where the earth ends and heaven begins.
These flats are located in Southern Bolivia near country’s Tunupa volcano and constitute the world’s largest salt desert, around 11,000 km sq.
These salt flats are 3,600m above sea level in the Andes, which renders it impossible to reach up and touch the clouds from the ground.
The salt flat is named as Salar de Uyuni. It emerged in the wake of transformations between several prehistoric lakes, and is covered by a salt crust sizing few meters.
The crust has extraordinary flatness with the average altitude variations within one meter over the entire sea area of the Salar.
The crust covers a pool of brine which is rich in lithium. It contains 50 to 70% of the world’s lithium reserves, which are being extracted now.
