Today, 25th April is world penguin day which marks the migration of these flightless, feathered creatures’ annual migration towards north. Here are a few interesting facts about them,
In the Antarctic fall season, penguins flee from their colonies and return only in the following spring.
Penguins spend 75% of their life at sea. And the migration they are starting today is also towards the ocean.
They do not migrate actually. This ‘migration’ only revolves around diving into the freezing waters answering their nature’s call to migrate. They swim north for only a few hundred miles (around 600 km) and stay among icebergs that are floating there. Basically, they do not go anywhere when they migrate.
The reason they do this is that in fall the days in Antarctica become darker and Penguins cannot see well in dark. That’s why they migrate north so they can hint for food otherwise they would starve.
Penguins are unique in many ways. For instance they can dive to a depth of 1,850 feet (565 meters), deeper than any bird.
Penguins are genius at discerning. They can identify a family member in a crowd of 80,000.
Penguins’ ancestors have been flightless for at least 62 million years. Among the extinct types of penguins are New Zealand birds that grew to be the size of adult humans.
The black-and-white color offers safety in the water. A predator looking up at the white front would have a hard time distinguishing it from reflected light, and the black back makes it difficult to see from above.
