Five facts about Siachen on 4th anniversary of Gayari Sector Tragedy

Today is the 4th anniversary of Gayari Sector Tragedy, which marks one of the blackest days in our military history. On this day we lost our 140 brave soldiers and a few civilians due to an avalanche. Here are a few facts regarding this deadly glacier which has trapped the lives of many soldiers.

Siachen, which literally means land of wild roses is the place actually barren, stingily cold and a place where nobody in their right mind would set foot in. But there are some impassioned folks whose minds are full of their country’s love and these people have not only set foot but also are stationed there.

The story starts when Indian military encroaches at the place in 1984, reaches the top and displays the flag at the top mountain of world. This stimulates Pakistan Army and it also makes camps there. Before that, the area was independent. From then on India holds the two third part of Siachen whereas Pakistan holds one third part.

Siachen has the temperature of minus 14 to 34 degrees in summer and minus 50 in winter at which everything just collapses. It is the toughest war place on earth and no one can go at the crag if Siachen without oxygen masks. It demands special dress, shoes and helmet to go there.

Even after these measures, you cannot survive for long as at minus 40, everything gets frozen and if there is a portion of your skin exposed to this cold it will be removed or damaged. And if you walk at this temperature your legs are numbed for which is there is no solution but confiscation. Wearing oxygen mask for long can impair your hearing and visual power.

Nobody can live for more than 20 days here and even in that tenure not everyone returns healthy. Currently, so many Pakistani soldiers have lost their body organs in Siachen and lived off on no food during their deployment.

Pakistan Army spends 15 million rupees everyday which becomes 450 million monthly and 5.5 billion annually. While the Indian Army expenses thrice on it. Here, every 3rd day one Pakistani soldier get martyrdom and every second day one Indian soldier dies. So every year Pakistan loses its 100 soldiers and India loses its 180 soldiers.
