Broken thumb ends Javeria Khan’s WT20 journey

CHENNAI:  Pakistan woman player Javeria Khan who had been injured by a bouncer during the match against West Indian woman team in Chennai, has been ruled out from World Twenty20 2016 due to broken thumb.

Team management has requested for replacement while Javeria will be sent back home.

According to ESPNCricinfo, Javeria has fractured her right thumb as she was struck by a bouncer from pacer Shamilia Connell in the first over of the chase. The ball struck her on the thumb before deflecting onto her neck beneath her ear.

Later, she was stretchered off the pitch before being taken to the nearby Apollo Hospital.

The rest of the team will fly to Delhi on Thursday.

Javeria was kept under observation as per the hospital’s procedures and later left for Pakistan soon after being discharged from the hospital.

West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor said the incident affected her players, and Connell in particular, until it became clear Khan was not in serious danger.

Pakistan captain Sana Mir said: “This is the first time the team has experienced something like this. “It is very difficult to deal with such situations as a team-mate, but I am proud of the girls for the way they kept cool and fought on right till the end.”
