MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin took the world by surprise when he announced withdrawal of Russian forces from Syria. Putin expressed that the Russian goals in Syria have been achieved. Russian forces were deployed in Syria since September, 2015.
The abrupt announcement is considered to have a positive impact on peace efforts in the region. The pullout would begin immediately starting March 15, 2016.
The situation int he region was worsening with Russian presence as Syrian activists and human rights groups accused Russian war campaign to be in violation of human rights law causing large scale civilian losses.

Russian officials however categorically denied all allegations of misconduct during their stay in Syria. Experts believe that by pulling out his forces Putin has put Assad on the spot to call for the end game. Bashar Al Assad in a simultaneous statement stated that he has spoken to Putin and they both agreed on limiting Russian presence in Syria.
Although key Russian military installations including an airbase in Latakia will continue to operate, Russia would now be helping with the civil war through diplomatic efforts, the civil war has taken up to 250,000 lives in last six years.
