MOSCOW: The first ExoMars mission is set to launch at 5:31AM ET tomorrow 14th March. The first phase mission is a collaboration between Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) and European Space Agency. The probe would find existing and extinct life on the Red planet.
Robotic spacecrafts would be sent to Mars to investigate possibilities of extinct life and determine presence of life on the planet. The first launch would be tomorrow and the second is scheduled for 2018.
The rocket would carry Trace Gas Orbiter and Schiaparelli EDM Lander into space on a seven month journey to land on Mars in October 2016. ESA revealed that the Trace Gas Orbiter will measure the types of gases in Martian atmosphere, specifically methane.
Schiaparelli lander will descend to Martian surface; a test run for gentle landings on Mars. The second launch carrying a rover designed to explore and dig the planet is depending on this crucial launch.
Another extended series of launches would be made for Mars if ExoMars missions find any life form or traces of one on the planet. ESA project scientist for ExoMars mission explained that it would be difficult to analyse the sample remotely therefore a safe delivery to Earth is sought through these missions. “It would be the logical next step, If we find life now on Mars, we’ll want to understand what kind of life that is.”
