ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is presiding over a high-level meeting to review crisis of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
According to our correspondent, the meeting is being attended by federal Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid, PML-N’s Senator Mushahid Ullah, Chairman PIA Irfan Elahi, Secretary Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and others besides the PM.
Reports said PM was briefed by authorities over the ongoing strike by PIA workers against proposed privatization of the airline.
The PM appreciated PIA’s efforts to resume flight operations and vowed not to bow down to protestors, source said.
The government has enforced Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) 1952 in PIA to ban protest and strikes of the national flag carrier workers who have been protesting for last two weeks, bringing countrywide flight operations to standstill.
The ESMA envisions serious penalties for the protesting employees, including dismissal from service, imprisonment for a maximum period of one year and fine.
