SC orders votes verification in Khawaja Asif’s constituency

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to provide all record of NA-110, Sialkot to National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) for verification of votes polled in general election 2013 through thumb impression.

The apex court also directed the NADRA to complete verification of thumb impressions and counterfoils within three months. It ordered the petitioner to bear all the expenses of verification process.

The three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali comprising Justice Sheikh Azamt Saeed and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain, heard the plea filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate Usman Dar regarding alleged rigging in NA-110 which was won by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif in May 2013.

Usman Dar had challenged Asif’s victory in the election tribunal on October 30, 2013, which was dismissed in March 2014. He then approached the apex court.

Dar’s counsel Babar Awan told the apex court that his client was in the United States for the treatment of his mother during the proceedings of election tribunal. His petition was dismissed on account of not attending the proceedings.

The counsel for Khawaja Asif appraised the court that the tribunal dismissed the petition due to lack of evidence. The witnesses appeared on behalf of Dar failed to substantiate any evidence of rigging, he added.

Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed remarked that fake votes, if polled, would be checked in the NADRA verification. – APP
