Owls are one of the unique species on earth. They are attributed with different qualities by different nations.
Here are a few facts regarding owls,
Owl superstitions associate the birds with bad luck, death and stealing souls in many cultures. The creepy and wonderful birds were painted in caves by ancient Egyptians and Maya people.
Owls are silent killers. Owls have special hooks on their wing feathers that make their flight silent, so they can easily swoop the prey from behind being unnoticed.
Owls eat larger prey than you think. Sometimes they may even attack a young wolf, a small deer or a fox.
Some owls do not hoot at all. Snowy owls produce sounds similar to those made by seabirds, small pygmy owls whistle, screech owls produce whistling toots.
People may help orphaned owlets to survive by giving them a big toy owl. Poor orphans from the zoo in Southhampton believe the toy to be their mother and seek for warmth under her wings.
Owls are long-sighted birds, they cannot focus on objects located next to them. Birdwatchers concur that tawny owls are a hundred times more sensitive at low light levels than humans. However we see much better at night than a specific kind of owls.
For most owl species, females are larger, heavier and more aggressive than males. Dimorphic female owls normally have a richer coloring than males.
