Azfar divorces Naveen Waqar

KARACHI: After three years of marriage, actor-director Azfar Ali and VJ-turned-actor Naveen Waqar have parted ways.

“I have divorced my now ex-wife Naveen Waqar. We’ve been separated since July 2015 and then I filed for divorce which came through in November,” Azfar told The Express Tribune.

Azfar says that since they’re both public figures, it is important for him to inform his fans and fraternity about the divorce by making an official announcement and to prevent fabricated stories from cropping up.

“The news of our marriage was blown way out of proportion and since it eventually became public news and information, I don’t want to keep anybody in the dark now,” said Azfar.

“I also chose to do this [disclose the news] because a lot of people are calling me and inviting us to their shows for a joint interview. I want everybody to know, once and for all, that we have separated and there is no need for this.”

According to Azfar, the decision to split was mutual. “I don’t think the reason behind the divorce is important, it’ll be enough to say that we were not getting along and if things are not happy at home, there is no point in dragging them on,” he said.

Naveen, who started off as a VJ and became a household name after Humsafar, was not available for comment despite repeated attempts. The Express Tribune was able to reach out to her brother, Faraz Waqar, who also refused to speak on the issue, stating it is a strictly personal matter.

Azfar was earlier married to actor Salma Hasan for 11 years, with whom he has a daughter. Salma divorced Azfar, following his marriage to Naveen.
