KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) takes majority of seats in Sindh followed by Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) as the second phase of Local Government elections in Sindh was completed on Thursday.

According to the unofficial and unconfirmed results, the PPP won from most of Sindh districts including Nawabshah, Tando Allah Yar and Tharparkar.

PPP had secured over 600 seats in the 14 districts of Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and Nawabshah divisions. At least 120 seats were won by independent candidates, 90 by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), 50 by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and 13 by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) as per preliminary results.

In Badin, Zulfiqar Mirza proved how weak the PPP was in its stronghold as candidates backed by the dissident jiyala swept all 14 seats of Badin Municipal Committees and two seats of Matli municipality. In the urban areas, which include town and municipal committees, Mirza bagged 33 seats against PPP’s 26.

The MQM swept Hyderabad where it was up against the Tameer-i-Hyderabad Ittehad – a ten party alliance comprising the PPP, PML-N, PTI, Jamaat-e-Islami and JUP. The MQM had a head start of 22 union committees, having won them unopposed, pushed its advantage to bag another 61 seats out of the 96 up for grabs.

Earlier on Thursday, polling began at 7:30am and continued for ten hours till 5:30pm.

The election commission postponed the LG polls in 81 Union Councils (UCs) including five Municipal Committees, 18 Town Committees and 58 Union Councils of different parts of Sindh.

According to the Election Commission the polls were postponed in compliance with the directives of the Supreme Court.

The affected constituencies included 24 UCs from Hyderabad division, 25 UCs from Mirpur Khas while 32 UCs of Benazirabad.

PPP swept Tando Allah Yar’s 21 seats out of total 22 Union Councils. The remaining one seat went to an independent candidate.

Umarkot also was swept by the PPP as all ten seats were grabbed by it.  The same result was witnessed in Nawabshah where all 57 seats went to the PPP.

Similarly, all Dadu seats were taken up by the PPP.

But, the ruling PPP faced defeat in Noushehro Feroz as all eight seats of Tharo Shah Town Committee were picked up by independent candidates.

PML-N led Mahrabpur LG polls by obtaining 12 out of 16 seats. Meantime, MQM and independent candidates received two seats each.
