Are faith and Science really at conflict with each other?

Are faith and Science really at conflict with each other| TheNewsTribe.com

Four centuries ago, Italian astronomer Galileo Galileo had a trial in which he was subjected to condemnation and imprisonment on the basis of his findings which differed from the Holy Office’s view. After that, Darwinism got attention of the clerics and invited an intense backlash from the public.

Many centuries have passed along but the debate over religion and science has not been resolved. History is replete with many such examples. The question arises that are the religious faith and science are really at daggers with each other.

A new research survey has done a thorough study over this question and attempted to know the public opinion and across a range of specific topics.

The key findings of the study are:

Those who are least religious observant have more tendency to perceive the religion and science at conflict.

About 73% of the adults who rarely observed religious practices were of the opinion that science and religion are at the conflict as compared to those who practices rituals usually.

There is no conflict between personal religious beliefs and science.

Those who held this view constituted about 68% and those who perceive a conflict were 30%.  The basis of the conflict was disagreement over evolution and the creation of universe.

Some believed that humans evolved over time.

65% individuals believed that humans did evolve over time while 35% held the view that humans evolved through natural processes. However 24% believed that human evolution was guided by a ‘supreme being’.

There is division over whether clergy should be involved in science policy debates.

On the scientific debates, like climate change half of the individuals agreed to the idea that churches should express their views on such issues. Those who are not associated with any religion say that church should stay out of such matters.

Religious difference do not play a role in believing on a number of science related topics.

An individual’s opinions on issues such as climate change are not influenced by his or her religious beliefs. But one exception was seen in this regard. People’s religious beliefs did matter on the debate over safety of genetically modified foods.

It is pertinent to mention here that the survey was conducted on American citizens, thus the results of the study are the public opinion of United States of America.
