LONDON: Queen Elizabeth II has secured another unique hounour as she became the Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, TheNewsTribe.com reported.
The 89-year old monarch ascended to the throne 63 years ago following the death of her father King George VI.
The queen, for whom the day also marks the anniversary of the death of her father King George VI, eschewed any formal celebration. Instead, Buckingham Palace organized her attendance of the opening of a new rail line, the longest to be built in the UK in more than a century.
According to the local media reports, while there is no official celebration, other events are planned around the country to mark the occasion, including a procession of historic vessels and passenger boats down the River Thames and the pealing of church bells across the country.
Sources closed to the Royal family informed the media that on Wednesday evening, she is due to have dinner with members of her family at Balmoral Castle, a large royal estate in Aberdeenshire where she spends her summers.
Those attending will include her grandson Prince William, who is second in line to the throne after his father Prince Charles, and his wife, the duchess of Cambridge, the person said.
Queen Elizabeth was crowned following the death of her father in 1952, after he failed to recover from a lung operation. Her reign has spanned 12 British prime ministers and dramatic changes in society.
