T20 cricket: Big threat for umpires

SYDNEY: Chief Selector Australian cricket team Rod Marsh, who represented Australia during 1970-1984 as a wicket keeper batsman, has termed T20 cricket as a big threat for on field umpires.

Marsh said hard hitting and International Cricket Council’s (ICC) pro-batting rules have made T20 cricket a big threat for the on field umpires.

He said if he was umpiring in the shortest format of cricket he would have worn chest guard, shin pads and abdominal protector for my own safety.

He suggested ICC to take some serious steps towards the safety of umpires in T20 format of the cricket.

Former Australian wicket keeper further said “Big hitting in T20 has made it more dangerous for umpires … It’s only a matter of time before an umpire in an international or first-class match is seriously hurt, if not killed.”
