NEW DELHI – Indian Sports Ministry recommended Indian tennis star for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.
According to details, Sania Mirza was recommended for the one biggest Indian civil award.
India sports secretory Ajit Sharan said that “We had got a late recommendation from AITA but the Minister accepted that and recommended the same to the Awards Committee.”
The award will be presented on the independence day of India after the final decision of award selection committee.
Earlier, Sania Mirza along with her Swiss partner Martina Hingis have won first-ever women’s doubles Grand Slam title as the pair routed their opponents in the final of Wimbledon Championships in London.
The top seeded Indo-Swiss pair beat Elena Vesnina-Ekaterina Makarova 5-7, 7-6, 7-5 in the final. This was the second time Sania appeared in the women’s doubles Grand Slam final in her career, she ended runners-up at the 2011 French Open with Russian partner Elena Vesnina.
