Karachi heatwave: death toll surpasses 770

KARACHI – The death toll from an ongoing heatwave in Pakistan’s economic hub and provincial capital has passed the figure of 770.

The Edhi Welfare Organisation told the media that their morgues had received hundreds of corpses, they had not possessed more capacity and the death toll was still rising.

There is anger among local residents at the authorities because power cuts have restricted the use of air-conditioning units and fans. Many of the victims are elderly people from low-income families.

According to the sources, thousands of people are being treated in Karachi hospitals and some of them are in serious condition. Hot weather is not unusual during this time of year in Karachi, but prolonged power cuts seem to have made matters worse for the locals.

People in Karachi feel that had the authorities moved proactively, many lives could have been saved. Both federal and provincial government denied to accept the responsibility of high number of deaths.
