Pakistan’s economic growth expected to rise to 5.1pc this year: UN

ISLAMABAD: A fresh survey by the United Nations says Pakistan’s growth is likely to improve in coming years due to government’s major efforts to address energy crisis and other infrastructure bottlenecks.

The UN’s Economic and Social survey of Asia and Pacific 2015 was launched at a ceremony in Islamabad.

Presenting the survey, the former Chief, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Microeconomic, Policy and Analysis section, Dr. Muhammad Hussain said there is an urgent need to make this growth inclusive and broad based to benefit all parts of the country.

The survey noted that in Pakistan, economic growth picked-up to four point one percent last year from average of three point seven percent in the previous three years.

It also noted that Pakistan’s economic growth is expected to rise to five point one percent this year.

The survey observed that inflation is on the decline and budget deficit is being contained. Foreign exchange reserves have significantly improved. Market confidence in Pakistan’s outlook seems to have improved. In April last year, the country issued sovereign bonds in international markets for the first time in seven years and it was oversubscribed.
