KARACHI: University of Karachi (UoK) department of International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), has set a great example of generating and consuming the energy, as they have installed an environment friendly electricity unit which runs an air conditioning plant (200 Tons) at the zero cost.
The ICCBS has setup a cost effective self power generation system, which fulfills not only the energy requirements but also provide an environment friendly solution.”
Director ICCBS-UoK Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary expressed these views while speaking at an official meeting held last week at H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, UoK.
He said that the power requirement and its generation were considered as one of the most serious issue of recent time.
He maintained that the electricity requirements of the developing countries, especially in Pakistan, were rising noticeably, whereas the infra-structure of power generation was not improving accordingly.
He said that ICCBS had setup this system just to keep the highly sophisticated research equipments save from the dire consequences of power failure or loadshedding. The ICCBS is regarded as one of the finest research establishments of the developing world.
“Seven Gas Fired Generators, including six 370 KVA and one 340 KVA, have been installed and are in operation round the clock. As the sophisticated research instruments need clean and un-interrupted power, several on-line UPS were also installed.
To save the batteries of UPS from complete drain (in case of long Power failures), emergency diesel generators, including one 425 KVA, three 300 KVA, one 120 KVA, two 100 KVA, have also been installed for each building. This triple layer energy matrix provides maximum protection to sophisticated scientific instrumentation and may serve a model for science institutions in the developing world facing the similar situation,” Dr. Iqbal Choudhary said.
