Millions Of Children Deprived Of Education In The Middle East

BEIRUT: The United Nations has warned that due to poverty, gender discrimination and violence in the Middle East from 1 million to 20 million children are deprived of schooling.

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said in a report submitted by the ongoing tensions in Syria and Iraq, 30 million children are deprived of schooling.

According to a joint report by UNICEF and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) there was an increase observed in the percentage of children going to school in the region, but in recent years it has come to stay in.

The report said that 43 million children of primary school age and 29 million children of lower secondary school age are deprived of schooling.

In addition, 51 million children do not have the pre-primary education and number of children not attending schools in the Middle East is 1 million 30 million.

According to figures presented in the report, pre-primary, primary and secondary education should be mandatory to at least 15% of the Middle East children.

For primary school children in Yemen, the situation is more acute, where only 6% of the children to go to school.

The situation of Secondary education in Djibouti and Sudan is worsening from other countries, while Iran and Morocco are also facing a similar situation regarding education.

To know the reasons for not sending children to school, a report is formulated form the study of 9 countries of the region.

Most low-income families prefer that their child should do labor rather to enroll their children in school because they cannot afford the expenses of fees, uniforms, and books.

UNICEF Regional Director Maria Calivis, while presenting the report in Beirut during the ceremony said that children of poor families often deprived of education whereas, they can achieve a lot.

Among other reasons of not sending children to schools also includes gender discrimination, which is as a major reason being given in the region of Middle East.
