IGP Punjab’s somersault: 147 Madressahs in Punjab receiving foreign funds

ISLAMABAD: Senate Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges was informed on Wednesday that there were 147 foreign-funded seminaries in Punjab. 

According to a private TV channel, Inspector General Police (IGP) Punjab Mushtaq Sukhera told the Committee that 147 seminaries in the province were financed by foreign funding.

It is to be mentioned earlier the IGP had said that there were no foreign-funded madrassas in Punjab.

However, on Wednesday he told the Senate Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges (that there were in fact nearly 150 seminaries receiving funds from foreign countries.

He further told the committee that  law enforcement agencies, including Punjab police were taking action against those involved in spreading hate speech under the National Action Plan (NAP).

The committee had summoned IGP Punjab Mushtaq Sukhera to explain his earlier stance that there was no foreign-funded seminary in the province.

The committee met with Senator Col (Retd) Tahir Hussain Mashhadi in the chair.

To a question,  Sukhera had told the Senate through a written reply on January 30 that not a single seminary is receiving foreign funding in Punjab.

The IGP further informed the Committee that the home department was registering all unregistered seminaries in the province.

He informed that the police had sealed a seminary affiliated with the Lal Masjid in the Rujhan Jaamali area of district DG Khan as the management of the seminary was involved in spreading hatred.
