Extremist in Pakistan fought to have me sentenced to death: Facebook CEO

MENLO PARK, California: Founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, in a status update said, “A few years ago, an extremist in Pakistan fought to have me sentenced to death because Facebook refused to ban content about Muhammad that offended him.”

Zuckerberg released his statement a day after a bloodbath at the France’s Charlie Hebdo headquarters in Paris where at least 12 persons were killed by the attackers including editor-in-chief Stephane Charbonnier while three other among them were cartoonists including Jean Cabut, Georges Wolinski and Bernard Verlhac.

‘We stood up for this because different voices — even if they’re sometimes offensive — can make the world a better and more interesting place. Facebook has always been a place where people across the world share their views and ideas, Zuckerberg said.

He claimed that the social networking website followed the laws ‘in each country’ and it ‘never let one country or group of people dictate what people can share across the world.’

He said, ‘Yet as I reflect on yesterday’s attack and my own experience with extremism, this is what we all need to reject — a group of extremists trying to silence the voices and opinions of everyone else around the world.

The Facebook CEO aimed, ‘I won’t let that happen on Facebook. I’m committed to building a service where you can speak freely without fear of violence. My thoughts are with the victims, their families, the people of France and the people all over the world who choose to share their views and ideas, even when that takes courage. ‪#‎JeSuisCharlie’

The status update drew a flurry of responses as hundreds of Pakistanis and Muslim users who commented on Zuckerberg’s status.

A user hailed from Pakistan, Salman Ali Shigri, commented, ‘Mr. Zuckerberg where were your thoughts when hundred of innocent children were killed at #Peshawarattack in terrorism. English media open there eyes when something is happened with them otherwise no highlights and I saw that English media were highlighting with totally wrong statements without any confirmation.’

He added, ‘If you really want to stood up for different voices and peace and love then stand up and think about to clean up all terrorism across the globe with the help of your social techs and ideas so that happiness can be stay alive forever. Thanks.’

Another user Afia Sajid reacted, ‘It’s funny you say that shame Facebook deleted posts that people put up about Gaza/Palestine. Or are you going to tell me that wasn’t intentional? I sense double standards here!!’
