Alleged Mumbai attacks mastermind Lakhvi confined under MPO

ISLAMABAD: The alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi has been detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO), a day after being granted bail by an anti-terrorism court.

The federal government has decided to approach the Supreme Court of Pakistan to have Lakhvi’s bail cancelled.

The ATC had granted bail to Lakhavi on surety bonds of Rs 500,000. Arguments for Lakhvi were made by Advocate Rizwan Abbasi while the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar made arguments against the accused being granted bail. The surety bonds of 0.5 million each were submitted in court on Friday after which the release orders were issued; however the government has decided to put him behind bars under 16 MPO.

Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi was arrested in February 2009 and was indicted along with six others on 25 November 2009 for alleged planning and helping to carry out the Mumbai attacks.

The 2008 attacks, when gunmen rampaged through Mumbai for three days, sent relations into deep freeze. India blamed Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba for the attack and handed over intercepts to use as evidence in the Lakhvi case.

Alleged mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi who was granted bail by an anti-terrorism court in Islamabad on Thursday has been detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.

A senior government source told a private TV channel that the government has also decided to appeal against the approval of Lakhvi’s bail in superior courts.

The ATC had ordered the release of Lakhvi after his post-arrest bail plea was accepted and Judge Syed Kausar Abbas Zaidi had set Lakhvi’s bail at Rs1 million. The decision drew a sharp reaction from India and surprised many with its unfortunate timing, coming just days after one of the deadliest terror attacks the country has ever seen.

Lakhvi is among the seven persons charged with planning and helping carry out the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The six other men facing trial in Adiala Jail for their alleged involvement in Mumbai attacks are Hammad Amin Sadiq, Shahid Jamil Riaz, Younas Anjum, Jamil Ahmed, Mazhar Iqbal and Abdul Majid.
