Land sliding in Indonesia kills 12, nearly 100 missing

JEMBLUNGAN: As many as 12 people were killed and nearly 100 missing in a landslide triggered by torrential downpours in Banjarnegara Central Java, an official said on Saturday.

According to reports, the rescue workers were still digging the mud and rubble after the landslide in search of buried scores of houses in Jemblungan village.

The landslide swept down a hillside in the village, sparing only two houses, an AFP correspondent said. TV footage showed bystanders watching the emergency effort while rescuers passed an orange body bag by hand through the muddy area.

An officer told AFP that they have found 12 bodies while searching for 96 others.

Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said it was unclear whether those missing were buried under the landslide or had taken refuge.

“Conditions on the ground are pretty tough and we need heavy machines to clear the road that has been covered by the landslide,” Nugroho added.
