‘PMLN govt, PTI should learn lesson from 1958, 1999 martial laws’

ISLAMABAD: A politico-religious party, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Ameer and chief of the political jirga of opposition parties Sirajul Haq urged the government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) must learn lesson from 1958, 1999 martial laws when political parties did not tolerate each other.

Sirajul Haq said that political parties did not tolerate each other in 1958 and the situation worsened and then they had to face a prolonged martial law.

He said that they should learn lesson from the past, saying the nation which does not learn lesson from the past, has future similar to its past, saying that today the situation is same as it was in 1999.

He said that both the sides – government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) – should now come to negotiation table to settle the dispute , saying that country cannot afford any political anarchy at this juncture.

Speaking to media here on Tuesday along with other members of the political Jirga, after meeting of the political Jirga tasked with mediation, Sirajul Haq said that the jirga talked to government about PTI demands. The former sought withdrawal of demand seeking resignation of the Prime Minister, he added.

Both the sides agreed on formation of judicial commission to probe rigging. This, he said, all happened due to efforts of the mediators.

Sirajul Haq expressed regret over the Faisalabad incident, saying that it should not have happened. He said that the brake of politics will fail if politics starts working like that.

Sirajul Haq said that the time has arrived that judicial commission should be formed to probe rigging issue and both government and PTI should fulfill their promises so that the country may move forward and the nation should make progress

On the occasion, Pakistan people’s Party (PPP) leader Senator Rehman Malik said the jirga’s efforts were commendable in settling the dispute.

He said the jirga attempted its best to convince both the sides to hold talks.

The situation developed on Monday, violence in Faisalabad, does not seem good for future prospects of talks. This could prove damaging in future, he said.

He said that the political Jirga is making efforts to bring both the sides on the negotiation table and the Jirga talked on the future strategy and considering as to whether political Jirga should approach to supreme court for formation of the commission or not, saying that Prime Minister has already written letter to apex court for formation of the commission.
