8 newborns die at DHQ Sargodha for ‘lack of incubators’

SARGODHA: Eight newborn babies have died at District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) Sargodha for what the relatives claim lack of incubators at the hospital.

According to reports, some eight newborn babies died in the hospital reportedly for lack of incubators.

Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of the newborns deaths and ordered the Secretary Health Punjab to submit a report to him.

Sources said that some 60 infants and newborns were under treatment at the hospital which has only five incubators, while 22 more infants were brought to the hospital from city’s private health facilities on Tuesday night.

The district’s lone government maternity hospital, Moula Bux Hospital, is situated at a distance of 30-minute drive from the DHQ. As the maternity hospital has no nursery ward, the newborns were shifted to DHG hospital.

Sources said that most of the infants died during shifting from maternity hospital to DHQ. The deceased are stated to be aged between two to eight hours.

MS DHQ Teaching Hospital Dr Iqbal Sammi has constituted a three-member committee to investigate the deaths of newborns at the hospital.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the District Teaching Hospital Sarghoda said that premature births coupled with low birth weight led to the deaths of the infants.

He also said that their deliveries were performed by midwives who were unable to provide frontline medical care that is imperative for a newborn baby.

The spokesperson added that 26 infants had been admitted in the hospital out of which 10 are said to be in critical condition. The spokesperson furthermore said the hospital only had a capacity of 25 nursery beds, but as there was no hospital of its kind in the district, it often had to deal with over admission.
