Only one Muslim among India’s new ministers

NEW DELHI: There is only one Muslim among the 21 ministers Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has included in his cabinet.

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi is the only Muslim among the recently inducted 21 ministers. He has been given the ministry of minority affairs.

He has been serving the Bhartiya Janata Party for a long time. He was elected to UP’s Rampur seat in 1998 and held a position in Vajpayee government.

Muslims constitute 11 percent of India’s population. Indian National Congress had a policy of having Muslims in key positions. Salman Khursheed held the all-important position of foreign minister in the previous Congress rule.
