PESHAWAR: Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan has threw its weight behind former justice Nasir Aslam Zahid for appointment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
On Friday, JI leader Liaqat Baloch while talking to media in Peshawar called for early appointment of a permanent CEC.
He said that JI supported Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid for the key constitutional appointment.
As the deadline given by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to government and opposition leader is nearing, parties have intensified efforts to reach consensus on any name for appointment as permanent Chief Election Commissioners.
On Thursday, Opposition leader in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for holding the constitutionally-mandatory process of meaningful consultation for appointment of CEC with consensus. The names of some five former judges of Supreme Court have come to fore for the coveted slot.
Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid among the front-runner and JI’s ally Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has also supported the former judge.
It is to be mentioned here that the Supreme Court  has recently set Nov 13 as last deadline for appointment of a permanent CEC, threatening in case of failure to meet the deadline it would withdraw its judge, which is currently serving as Acting Chief Election Commissioner.
